Feeling Precarious?
Precarious is becoming a blanket term to describe the general condition of 21st century labor. Precarious as in unstable and uncertain. The condition of not knowing where one's next paycheck is coming from is certainly familiar to students and workers in the temp, service, and knowledge industries. Obviously there's a thin line between the kind of (semimythical) liberation that comes with working for oneself and this sense of uncertainty and impending doom, between Nomadism and Desperation. Issues and implications of precariousness have been the subject of recent conferences in London and civil disobedience in Rome
